Swifts

photo

On the cobbles in the beautiful town of Cividale del Friuli, in Northern Italy, some years ago. In the skies above then too, as also now here in south Manchester.

I have some experience with swifts, particularly in Spain – I saw a man in Valencia catch one up that was grounded on the street for some reason, and fling it up into renewed flight. And once in the old walled cty of Avila found one bedewed on the cold grass by the walls in the early morning. I tried to move it into the sun, but I do not think it can have survived – they seem so out of place, so alien almost, on the ground. I liked the grafitti, though – there were several of them, leading away up the sloping, winding street…

photograph

Photographs from the Hume Family Collection at the University of Queensland.

B15G

Discovery Channel :: News :: Iceberg Looms Over Antarctic Base.

An iceberg more than twice the size of Malta has drifted hundreds of miles to a position off the coast of Australia’s Casey station in Antarctica.

“As the Antarctic winter closes in, B15G appears as a grey line occupying 90 degrees of arc and defining half our horizon, in places gleaming where the sun reflects off an ice cliff,” station leader Jeremy Smith said in the statement.

File under “jawdropping”, I think…
